ame 2 Box ScoreAUSTIN, Texas – #24 St. Edward's hosted the #16 Drury Panthers Friday afternoon in what would feature two radically different types of offensive games. St. Edward's won the first game, 8-0, with clutch hitting while Drury took the second game, 6-2, in a contest that featured four homeruns.
Game 1 - St. Edward's (7-5) jumped out to an early start in the first inning as they pushed two quick runs across. After
NATE TURNER singled and A.J. Hermanson walked, the duo advanced to second and third via a sacrifice bunt from
GABLE WHITACRE.
JOSEPH OLSON ultimately came through with the two-out single that scored both runners and gave the Hilltoppers a 2-0 lead.
Sherrod was terrific as he pitched a complete game tying his career high with 12 strikeouts and he only surrendered three hits. Despite his strikeouts, his defense made a terrific play for him in the top of the fifth.
With runners at the corners and the Panthers (1-1) threatening to push their first run across, a bunt attempt was laid down in the direction of
JONATHON ARROWOOD. Arrowood turned and threw to
KEVIN MAYO who was covering first for out number one, but Mayo caught the runner at third sleeping and he fired across the diamond to third baseman
DYLAN WATTS for a 3-4-5 double play. Sherrod quickly struck out the next batter to end the threat.
St. Edward's tacked on a couple more runs for insurance in the bottom of the sixth. The Toppers once again found some two out magic as Watts drew a walk.
WESLEY HARRIS then drilled a high arcing triple into the right field corner to score Watts.
NATE TURNER proceeded to bloop a single down the right field line as well to score Harris and extend the Hilltopper lead to 4-0. Arrowood would draw a bases loaded walk to bring the score to 5-0.
They continued to pound away at Drury reliever Ryan Wedermeyer as Olson bounced a two-run single up the middle and Mayo quickly followed up with another single to push the lead to 8-0. Sherrod would finish off the Panthers to give the Hilltoppers an 8-0 victory.
The Hilltoppers pulled off a rare feat as all eight of their runs came across with two outs. Olson had a great game at the plate as he went 2-for-3 and had four RBI for the game.
Game 2: The Hilltoppers struggled to find runs in the second game as they fell by a score of 6-2.
St. Edward's came away with a quick run in the second inning as Olson continued his hot hitting with a two-out single. Mayo slashed a liner to the right center gap that skipped past the center fielder and right fielder and ultimately resulted in an RBI triple. Hermanson would later turn on a Austin Falcourn offering and homered to left field to tie the score 2-2 in the sixth inning.
However, it was Luke Tewes that stole the show as he homered in the third and sixth innings off of Hilltopper starter
DALTON BROWN and reliever
BRYCE DAVIS. With the bases loaded, the Hilltoppers made a move to the bullpen to bring in the hard throwing
DAN BECKS in the seventh inning. Tewes lifted a drive to right field that cleared the fence and gave the Panthers a 6-2 lead.
Head Coach Rob Penders spoke to us after Game 2 and had high praise of Sherrod and of his team's approach with two outs. "Colin pitched like a true ace today and he was great in the few pressure situations he had. Our offense also did a great job of producing runs with two outs and that's an area where we've excelled this year." He also gave credit to Drury in saying, "They came up with some very timely knocks. Their big hit came because we gave them an extra out and their guy capitalized on it. We'll need to minimize our mistakes tomorrow and play our style of baseball."
St. Edward's and Drury will face off in another doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch from Lucian-Hamilton Field is set for 12:00 p.m. Live video and stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
