Game 1 vs. Colorado MinesGame 2 vs. Angelo StateSAN ANGELO, Texas – After winning both games on the opening day of the George McCorkle Challenge on Friday, the St. Edward's Softball team dropped both games to close out the tournament. The Hilltoppers lost in extra innings to Colorado Mines, 5-4. They ended the tournament with a 3-0 loss to #11 Angelo State.
Game 1 vs. Colorado Mines:In the first game of the day for St. Edward's (2-4), the Hilltoppers struck early in the first inning.
ALEX MAYFIELD led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on an error. She would steal third and come in to score on a sacrifice fly by
CAITIE CARNEY.
Colorado Mines (1-2) answered the Hilltoppers in the bottom of the first inning with a run.
The Hilltoppers pushed across another run in the fourth inning. It was a sacrifice fly that helped St. Edward's as pinch-runner
AUBREY RUIZ scored on a sacrifice fly from
CYDNEY ERVIN.
However, once again, the Orediggers had an answer. With the help of a Hilltopper error, Colorado Mines scored two unearned runs to take a 3-2 lead through four innings.
St. Edward's tied the score in the top of the sixth inning as
EMILY MAYFIELD drove in
FAITH ROBERTS with two outs to tie the score, 3-3.
Neither team could score the rest of the way, as the game went to extra innings. With the international tiebreaker rule in effect each team would start the inning with a runner on second and nobody out. St. Edward's was able to score one run in the top of the eighth, but the Orediggers would take the game in the bottom of the inning with a walk-off two-run single.
KATELYN KLUG (1-2) suffered the loss for the Hilltoppers, allowing five runs (two earned) on 13 hits, while walking three and striking out three in 7.1 innings of work.
EMILY MAYFIELD led the Hilltoppers at the plate with two hits, while Ervin was tops on the team with two RBI.
Game 2 vs. #11 Angelo StateAngelo State (4-0) scored three runs in the bottom of the first as they collected five hits. That was all they needed, as Brandy Marlett was outstanding on the mound. Marlett allowed just one hit, while striking out seven batters in her complete-game shutout.
ALEX MAYFIELD tallied St. Edward's only hit of the game. The sophomore infielder had two hits on the afternoon.
SARAH DEBROW (1-2) took the loss for St. Edward's as the senior allowed three runs on nine hits, while walking three and striking out five batters in 6.0 innings of work.
St. Edward's will be back in action Tuesday when they host Texas A&M-Kingsville in the home opener. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. Live video and stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
