AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's Softball team hit three home runs in their doubleheader split with Panhandle State Saturday afternoon at Diane Daniels Field. The Hilltoppers run-ruled the Aggies, 9-0 in game one, but fell in the final game of the series, 4-1.
Game 1St. Edward's (17-9, 5-1 HC) picked up where they left off in Friday's game with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
ALEX MAYFIELD started things off with a bunt single. After Mayfield stole her 18
th base of the season,
CAITIE CARNEY drew a walk.
FAITH ROBERTS stepped to the plate and quickly deposited her fourth home run of the season over the wall in left field.
The Hilltoppers kept the offense rolling in the second inning.
CYDNEY ERVIN led off the inning with a walk. After
BREAH WHITTEN sacrificed Ervin to second base,
ALEX MAYFIELD was hit by a pitch. The duo stole second and third base, respectively, and Olson drove in Ervin with a sacrifice fly. Carney tallied the second home run of the game for the Hilltoppers, as she deposited the Aggie offering over the fence in dead center to make it 6-0.
Carney was at it again in the fourth inning. After
ALEX MAYFIELD and Olson started the inning with back-to-back singles, Carney ripped her second home run of the game over the centerfield fence to make it 9-0.
The game would be called early as the Hilltoppers achieved the run-rule victory.
KATELYN KLUG (7-6) picked up the victory, allowing just two hits, while walking one and striking out seven batters in her complete-game shutout.
Game 2Panhandle State (7-19, 1-5 HC) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first inning on a two-RBI single from Madison Heathington.
St. Edward's cut the lead in half in the second inning when Whitten knocked in
MORGAN DUFOUR with a two-out double.
The Aggies pushed to more runs across in the third inning on a two-run home run from pitcher Sam Arledge to make it, 4-1.
Panhandle State made the 4-1 lead hold up as Arledge picked up the win in the circle, allowing one run on five hits, while walking three and striking out five batters.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Tuesday when they host cross-town rival Huston-Tillotson. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. at Diane Daniels Field. Live video and stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
