LUBBOCK, Texas – In a matchup of two first-place teams in the Heartland Conference, St. Edward's and Lubbock Christian attempted to outslug one another during their doubleheader Friday afternoon. The Lady Chaps came out on top in both games by scores of 8-6, and 8-4.
Game 1St. Edward's (17-11, 5-3 HC) got off to a great start in the first game as both
CAITIE CARNEY and
MORGAN DUFOUR homered off of Lubbock Christian starting pitcher Courtney McGee. Carney's was a solo shot, while Dufour's drove in two to put St. Edward's ahead, 3-0.
Lubbock Christian (19-6, 9-1 HC) answered with four runs in the bottom of the second inning, but the Hilltopper offense was not to be denied. In the third inning,
ALEX MAYFIELD and
KACI OLSON both singled to get things started. After a ground out by Carney,
FAITH ROBERTS laid down a squeeze bunt to score Mayfield. Olson was thrown out at home trying to sneak in from third. On the play, Roberts tried to advance to second and the throw by the Lady Chap catcher went all the way to the wall in center. Roberts easily trotted home to put St. Edward's in front, 5-4.
St. Edward's added another run in the fourth inning when they loaded the bases with nobody out. A groundout from Olson would plate
CYDNEY ERVIN, and make it 6-4. However, that is all the Hilltoppers would get from the promising opportunity. That would eventually come back to haunt them.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Molly Davidson launched a three-run homer to give the lead back to the home team. The Lady Chaps added another run in the same inning for the final 8-4 margin.
Both Roberts and
ALEX MAYFIELD collected two hits for the Hilltoppers.
SARAH DEBROW (10-4) suffered the loss for St. Edward's.
Game 2The second game of the doubleheader saw Lubbock Christian jump out to an early 7-0 lead through the first three innings and never look back.
St. Edward's tried to rally as they pushed across three runs in the fourth inning. Pinch-hitter
LAURA ALVARADO tripled in two runs and
BREAH WHITTEN added another RBI to cut the lead to 7-3.
After the Lady Chaps scored another run in the bottom of the fourth inning, Carney added her second home run of the day for the final margin, 8-4.
KATELYN KLUG (7-7) suffered the loss in game two. Of the eight runs she allowed, only four were earned.
The two teams will finish their three-game series with a single game on Saturday. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. and live video and stats will be available on the Lady Chap Athletic Website. The game was moved up an hour due to possible rain in the forecast.
