LUBBOCK, Texas – The St. Edward's Baseball team was locked in a pitcher's duel with Lubbock Christian for most of Saturday's contest. However, some timely hitting in the eighth inning earned them a 4-2 victory and series sweep of the Chaps(15-16, 3-7 HC).
St. Edward's (24-8, 10-2 HC) started its comeback bid in the eighth inning as
NATE TURNER ripped a one-out single through the right side.
A.J. HERMANSON stepped up to the plate and would walk around the bases just a few moments later as he launched a homerun over the left field wall. After
GABLE WHITACRE worked a walk,
JOSEPH OLSON pushed a single through the right side of the infield to give the Hilltoppers men at the corners and a 2-2 score.
JD Arrowood laid down a bunt that was perfectly placed and managed to leg out a single. With the bases loaded,
KEVIN MAYO came through with a clutch hit as he snuck a single through the left side of the infield, bringing Whitacre into score and give the Hilltoppers the lead. Wes Harris stayed patient at the plate and drew a walk to score Olson and extend St. Edward's lead to 4-2.
Hilltopper starter
CAMERON STANTON pitched a terrific game through his six innings of work, allowing just seven hits and one earned run for the afternoon.
VINNY WHITENIGHT followed him and earned the victory as he allowed just one hit and one run in his two innings of relief.
The Hilltoppers would look to
CAM HATCH to close out the game in the ninth inning. After recording two quick outs, Hatch walked Stephen Withrow, who later advanced to second via a passed ball. Hatch would settle down and shut the door on any hopes of a comeback, inducing a groundout the very next pitch to earn his seventh save of the season.
St. Edward's will next host Arkansas Fort Smith in a crucial Heartland Conference series. First pitch of Thursday's doubleheader is set for 1:00 p.m. at Lucian-Hamilton Field. Live coverage can be found on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
