AUSTIN, Texas – After two relatively low scoring games in the doubleheader opener on Saturday, #18 St. Edward's pounded out 12 runs on 11 hits to defeat Oklahoma Christian, 12-2 to complete three-game series sweep at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
St. Edward's (14-6, 3-0 HC) got off to a fast start in the first inning as they pushed across six runs. They did all the damage on just one hit. The one hit was a big one as
JONATHAN DAVIS blasted a ball half way up the net past the left field fence for a grand slam.
MILES WRIGHT also picked up an RBI on a walk in the first frame.
The Hilltoppers would tack on single runs in the second through fourth innings.
J.D. ARROWOOD,
NATE TURNER and Wes Harris all had RBI-hits.
After Oklahoma Christian (8-8, 0-3 HC) got back two runs in the sixth inning, St. Edward's got them back in the seventh inning as
GABLE WHITACRE singled home a run and
KEVIN MAYO drove in two runs on a double to end the game by run rule, 12-2.
"We started off the series well with the comeback win yesterday, and today the balance of the game was in the first inning," head coach Rob Penders said. "A sweep is always big, especially in conference play. We can swing the bats, but the challenge for us is if we swing them all of the time. This team can be an offensive juggernaut, we just need to put things together and you will get big innings like the first inning today."
Fresh off his Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Week status from last week,
CAMERON STANTON (3-0) picked up the victory on the mound for the Hilltoppers, allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out four batters in 5.2 innings of work.
When asked about Stanton, Penders had this to say about the junior righthander: "He made a full-time commitment to pitching this offseason and it has really paid off. He has been throwing strikes and getting ahead in the count. He gets a lot of bad contact from the batters, and when he has all four pitches working he has been great for us."
St. Edward's will be back in action Tuesday when they host Southeastern Oklahoma State. First-pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. at Lucian-Hamilton Field. Live video and stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
