McClurg’s Double-Double Not Enough on Senior Day

Billie, Elder, Frantz and Perez honored at final home match

AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's volleyball fell behind early and was unable to recover Saturday as the Hilltoppers lost 3-1 on Senior Day.

Prior to the match, St. Edward's honored seniors JACLYN BILLIE, TABITHA ELDER, and AVALON FRANTZ as well as student manager Daniel Perez.

Junior MADISON MCCLURG led the Toppers with 15 kills and 13 digs while hitting .353. Sophomore MORGAN BECKHAM also had a standout performance with 28 digs.

The Hilltoppers (9-15, 7-4 HC) are now tied with Newman (18-9, 7-4 HC) for second in the Heartland Conference standings. Earlier this season, St. Edward's defeated the Jets 3-1 in Wichita, Kan.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Billie served the Hilltoppers to an early 5-3 lead in set one, but an 8-2 run from the Jets put the game out of reach.
  • KATE HENDRIX knocked down a kill in set two to make it 26-25 before Newman scored three straight points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Hendrix broke a 12-12 tie in set three and then served a 4-0 run to give the Hilltoppers a 17-12 lead.
  • St. Edward's finished the third game on an 8-1 run and Beckham capped off the win with a service ace.
  • A 7-0 run from Newman in the fourth put them in front 11-7 and the Jets did not look back.

HILLTOPPER NOTES
  • MORGAN BECKHAM is now averaging 6.53 digs per set which ranks top five in the nation.
  • MIKAYLA PARKER collected five blocks and upped her average to 1.09 blocks per set.
  • St. Edward's is now 14-5 in the all-time series against Newman.

QUOTE BOARD: HEAD COACH MARY DEJUTE
"We didn't rise to the occasion. Newman executed their game plan and really had their way with us. Unfortunately we didn't execute our game plan and that hurts even more because these seniors work so hard. I feel terrible that their last home stand wasn't a win, but they have been an absolute joy to coach."
