Aoudou’s Late Goal Pushes St. Edward’s to Sweet 16

Hilltoppers defeat Regis, 1-0

AUSTIN, Texas – STEVE AOUDOU's goal in the 86th minute gave St. Edward's a 1-0 victory over Regis Saturday in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

St. Edward's (18-2-1) advances to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the second time in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The match stayed near midfield for most of the early going. Regis outshot St. Edward's 4-2 in the opening half.
  • Senior HAIDEN STILES had two chances to put the Hilltoppers ahead early. In the 39th minute, Stiles had a shot blocked within the six-yard box and an uncontested header that just sail over the crossbar.
  • In the second half, St. Edward's had four shots within the first 10 minutes of action.
  • The Hilltoppers finally struck pay dirt in the 86th minute. Sophomore DYLAN ARMSTRONG found Aoudou alone in the box. The defender bent the ball around the goalkeeper to the far post.

HILLTOPPER NOTES
  • This was the first NCAA tournament victory in program history for St. Edward's.
  • St. Edward's evens the series with Regis at five wins each.
  • Aoudou, a converted midfielder, played the entire 90 minutes at defender for St. Edward's.
  • The Hilltoppers increase their school record for victories to 18.

QUOTE BOARD: HEAD COACH BRIAN YOUNG
"I thought Regis was a much more difficult opponent than what we saw on film. They came out after us and put a lot of pressure on us. As the game went on, we were able to control the ball a lot more."

JUNIOR DEFENDER OWAIN HOSKINS
"We knew they were a good team, and maybe one of the best sides we have seen. We were able to concentrate the entire game and that really helped us."

SENIOR GOALKEEPER KEVIN LEIB
"There was a lot of desire in all our players. We have had a few shortcomings this season but we have learned from them. We came out today with a lot of energy and played for one another."

UP NEXT
St. Edward's advances to the NCAA Sweet 16 where it will meet the winner of the Colorado Mesa-Midwestern State match. That match will take place next week with the highest remaining West Region seed as the host. Check the Hilltopper Athletic Website for postseason updates.
