Lengthy Road Trip Begins with Loss to Daemen

St. Edward’s playing third game in five days

AMHERST, N.Y. – Playing its third game in the last five days, St. Edward's men's basketball ran out of gas Saturday in a 74-64 loss to Daemen College at Lumsden Gymnasium.

The Hilltoppers (2-2) fell behind in the first half by double digits and could not respond down the stretch in the second half. The game was the start of a five-game road trip for St. Edward's; the Hilltoppers will log more than 3,500 miles over the next week.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Each team matched the other shot for shot in the first eight minutes of action. There were six ties and four lead changes which lead to a 15-15 score with 12:47 left in the first half.
  • Daemen College increased its lead to double digits in the first half on the strength of 5-of-12 shooting from behind the three-point line. The Wildcats captured a 40-29 lead at the break.
  • In the second half, St. Edward's was able to cut the lead to 64-60 with 3:41 left. However, a 10-4 run by Daemen College in the final stanza gave the Wildcats the victory.

HILLTOPPER NOTES
  • Sophomore CORY MCKENDREE scored a career-high 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting. McKendree started for the first time in his career.
  • Senior ETHAN GILBERT had a solid all-around game, finishing with 13 points, six rebounds and four assists.
  • Senior JOHN GRAMLICH tallied six points to increase his career total to 999. Gramlich will now vie to become the 28th member of the St. Edward's 1,000-Point Club in Monday's contest at Roberts Wesleyan.
  • This was the first meeting between the two teams.

QUOTE BOARD: HEAD COACH ANDRE COOK
"We had very little energy and enthusiasm for today's game. Daemen is a very good team and we needed to play well to win. We didn't. We need to move past this and work to get a split in New York."
