St. Edward’s Digs Deep in Victory Over Roberts Wesleyan

John Gramlich joins 1,000-point club in 94-84 win over Red Hawks

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Four Hilltoppers scored in double figures Monday night to lead St. Edward's in a 94-84 victory over Roberts Wesleyan College at the Voller Athletic Center.

Senior JOHN GRAMLICH led the Hilltoppers with 21 points and became the 28th member to join the St. Edward's 1,000-point club.

St. Edward's (3-2) was playing its fourth game in seven days.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • St. Edward's held the lead for the first 10 minutes of action with its lead growing to as many as seven points.
  • Roberts Wesleyan took the lead for the next five minutes before the Hilltoppers responded with a huge run to take a 48-45 advantage into the break.
  • In the second half, the Hilltopper lead again grew to seven points. The Red Hawks responded with offense of their own, jumping to a 68-67 lead with 8:20 remaining.
  • That was the last lead the home team had as St. Edward's received nine points from Gramlich and seven by Burton down the stretch.
  • The Hilltoppers made 9-of-10 free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

HILLTOPPER NOTES
  • St. Edward's shot a season-best 90.5 percent (19-21) from the free throw line. That ties for eighth-best single-game performance in team history.
  • Gramlich's 21 points already has moved him into 25th place on the all-time scoring list. Fellow teammate RAMIR BURTON is currently in 14th place with 1,264 points after scoring 18.
  • Defense continues to be a strong suit for the Hilltoppers as they forced 16 turnovers and scored 21 points off turnovers.
  • Senior ETHAN GILBERT and sophomore JAMES TAYLOR both scored 14 points, while junior SEAN WATKINS rounded out the starting lineup with nine points and a game-high five assists.
  • Sophomore CORY MCKENDREE produced off the bench with seven points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
  • This was the first meeting between the two teams.

QUOTE BOARD: HEAD COACH ANDRE COOK
"This was a tough road win and I am proud of our guys for how we got tough and finished the game out at the end. Every game we play will be like this, and we need to win these games. It's good that we got one under our belt."
