Armstrong’s Two Goals Lead St. Edward’s to Championship

Hilltoppers get revenge with 2-0 defeat of Midwestern State

Match Highlights

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – DYLAN ARMSTRONG scored two goals in the final 12 minutes to lead St. Edward's to a 2-0 victory Sunday over Midwestern State in the Heartland Conference Tournament Championship.

Sunday's win marked the Hilltoppers' third consecutive Heartland Conference Tournament title.

St. Edward's (17-2-1) avenged an earlier loss to the Mustangs in Austin, while snapping MSU's 11-match win streak

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams had numerous scoring opportunities in the first 70-plus minutes, but the two goalkeepers kept the match scoreless.
  • In the 78th minute, Armstrong sent a shot that was blocked by a Midwestern State defender. He picked up the rebound and put it past the Mustang goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead.
  • Four minutes later, Armstrong tallied his second goal in the 82nd minute when he volleyed a shot to the far post.
  • Junior JOHN-MATHEW BLAY-TOFEY was ejected for his second yellow card following the second goal. The Hilltoppers were forced to play a man down for the final eight minutes.

HILLTOPPER NOTES
  • The Hilltoppers have won the last three Heartland Conference Tournament titles.
  • St. Edward's snapped Midwestern State's 11-match winning streak.
  • Armstrong has scored five goals in his last five matches. The forward was last year's Heartland Conference Freshman of the Year.
  • OWAIN HOSKINS, TY MOBLEY, and JOSH TAYLOR were all named to the All-Tournament Team. Armstrong captured MVP honors.

QUOTE BOARD: HEAD COACH BRIAN YOUNG
"The players put together two impressive matches against quality teams. We are always a good soccer playing team, but in these last two matches, we really competed and had the desire to dominate both games. Playing these quality opponents away from home will help prepare us for the NCAA tournament wherever it is. Every one of our four tournament goals was quality, and the players earned another championship. These guys are outstanding players and people."
