SAN MARCOS, Texas. – St. Edward's sophomore guard BAILEY HILL returned to her hometown Saturday and scored 11 points as St. Edward's women's basketball upset Texas State 65-51.
 
Hill was the Hilltoppers' second-leading scorer. SHAKERA BARNES led the team with 12 points and six assists. KHIANI CLARK led all rebounders with nine boards.
 
Saturday's victory was an exhibition for St. Edward's (4-5). However, the loss does count for Texas State (3-5).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• Hill opened the scoring with a layup, sparking a 10-0 run to open the game.
• MADISON SCHENCK drained a 3-pointer with 1:07 remaining in the first to give the Hilltoppers an 18-9 after the first quarter.
• St. Edward's opened the second quarter with a three from Hill to make it 21-9.
• Six second-chance points in the period helped the Hilltoppers to a 33-19 halftime lead.
• LEXI CUNNINGHAM, SAUNDRA GUILLORY, and FAIREN SUTTON put together a 7-0 run to close the third quarter.
• Texas State outscored the Hilltoppers 19-13 in the fourth, but it would not be enough.

 
HILLTOPPER NOTES

• Saturday marks St. Edward's first victory over Texas State in program history, and head coach J.J. Riehl's first win over an NCAA Division I opponent.
• The Hilltoppers led for 39:20 of play and never trailed the Bobcats.
• Barnes is averaging 5.8 assists per game this season.

"It's a great win, but we have to keep things in perspective. We were really more focused on us and what we needed to do. They carried forward momentum from the past couple of weeks, and the fact that we were able to do that and get a win feels really great. I'm really happy for the kids. It was a tough couple of weeks to start the season, and they've really rebounded nicely the last couple of weeks. To cap it off with this win-I couldn't be more proud."
