Rebounds Not Enough for Hilltoppers Against #1 Lady Chaps

AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's Women's Basketball outrebounded the No. 1 team in the country, but fell to Lubbock Christian, 95-44 on Thursday night.

ATEH ADE had a career night for the Hilltoppers with 10 points, while SHAKERA BARNES led the team with 13. KHIANI CLARK turned in a game-high seven rebounds. ABBY HOPPER, LEXI FATHEREE, and Ade all tallied a blocked shot, and Barnes cashed in on a pair of steals.

The loss moves St. Edward's just under .500 in conference play at 7-8, with an overall record of  9-14. The top-ranked Lady Chaps remain undefeated on the year at 23-0 and 15-0.

"I thought we came out really well, and that was one of the keys," said head coach J.J. Riehl. "Midway through the second quarter they started going on those runs that they like to go on, and we had talked about holding those runs to six. We didn't do that. We didn't do that, and we didn't show a lot of grit or fights in those moments. You have to give Lubbock Christian a lot of credit, because it's tough to continue playing and not lose focus. I just thought we could have fought a little harder."

In the first quarter St. Edward's gave LCU all they could handle, going basket-for-basket with the Lady Chaps.  The home team led twice in the first quarter and went into the break only trailing by five.

However, single-digit scoring in the second and third quarters set back the upset hopes for Coach Riehl's squad. Baskets started falling for the Hilltoppers in the final quarter, but the damage had been done .

St. Edward's closes its home schedule on Saturday with a homecoming matchup against Panhandle State. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. with homecoming court announcements slated for halftime. Live video and stats of the game will be available at GoHilltoppers.com.
