AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's softball team moved into first place in the Heartland Conference with a doubleheader split Wednesday against Oklahoma Christian at Diane Daniels Field.
St. Edward's (18-25, 10-4 Heartland) took game one 9-2, before dropping game two, 4-3. The Hilltoppers are a half game ahead of St. Mary's. Oklahoma Christian (27-18, 9-5 Heartland) stays in third place in the conference standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1: St. Edward's 9, Oklahoma Christian 2)
W-Slatten (9-8), L-Hagood (12-9)
- Oklahoma Christian started the scoring with two runs in the fourth inning.
- The Hilltoppers pounded out four runs on three hits and chased Eagle starting pitcher Madison Hagood from the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- St. Edward's put the game out of reach in the fifth inning with five runs.
- Hilltopper starting pitcher LAUREN SLATTEN picked up the win, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out eight batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2: Oklahoma Christian 4, St. Edward's 3) (9)
W-Nordyke (6-5), L-Rex (4-11), S-Hagood (5)
- St. Edward's scored two runs in the first inning, using a stolen base from ALEX MAYFIELD, an Oklahoma Christian error, and a RBI double from KAYLA APPLEBY.
- BREAH WHITTEN made it 3-0 with an RBI-single in the second inning.
- Oklahoma Christian got two runs back in the third inning on a two-RBI double.
- The Eagles knotted the score in the fourth inning with a single run.
- Both teams struggled at the plate as the game headed to extra innings.
- Oklahoma Christian tallied a run in the top of the ninth inning and the Hilltoppers could not respond.
HILLTOPPER NOTES
- Mayfield finished the day 5-for-7 at the plate with three runs scored and a RBI.
- Whitten, Appleby, and Bryson all finished with three hits on the day.
- Appleby led the team with four RBI.
- Slatten has won five of her last six starts in the circle.
- St. Edward's trails Oklahoma Christian in the all-time series, 13-8.
