Hilltoppers Fall to Eagles in Rubber Match

St. Edward’s drops 1-0 decision to Oklahoma Christian in 12 innings

AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's softball team dropped its second-straight extra-inning game to Oklahoma Christian Thursday, falling to the Eagles,1-0, in 12 innings.
 
St. Edward's (18-26, 10-5 Heartland) falls into a tie for second place with Oklahoma Christian (28-18, 10-5 Heartland) in the conference standings. St. Mary's (34-10, 11-4 Heartland) takes over first place with its series win over Texas A&M-International.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
W-Hagood (13-9), L-Slatten (9-9)
  • Through the first four innings, both teams produced just two hits each.
  • Both starting pitchers had solid outings, but were forced to leave the circle with the game going extra innings.
  • Hilltopper starter OLIVIA BURDICK tossed 9.1 innings of shutout softball, allowing six hits and striking out six batters.
  • In the bottom of the 11th inning, sophomore KAYLA APPLEBY tagged up at third base on a fly ball to centerfield, but was called out at home to send the game to the 12th inning.
  • Oklahoma Christian took the lead in the top half of the 12th inning on a sacrifice fly.
  • The Hilltoppers put two runners on base with one out in the bottom of the 12th, but came up empty to end the game.
 
HILLTOPPER NOTES
  • The Hilltoppers have played four extra-inning games this season and have a 1-3 record in those games.
  • Senior ALEX MAYFIELD and sophomore BRITTNEY BRYSON both had two hits.
  • Mayfield finished the three-game series going 7-for-12 at the plate.
  • St. Edward's trails Oklahoma Christian in the all-time series, 14-8.

"Our pitchers and our defense kept us in the game. Olivia threw well and I was very proud of how she competed. The defense stayed tough the entire game, but we just couldn't execute offensively. That was the difference in the game."
