WICHITA, Kan. – The St. Edward's softball team dropped a 6-0 decision Sunday in the series finale against Newman.
After starting Heartland Conference play 9-3, St. Edward's (19-30, 11-7 Heartland) has dropped its last two series, which puts them in a tie for second place in league play. Newman (16-33, 9-9 Heartland) has won its last three conference series.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Newman opened the scoring in the first inning with a run.
- St. Edward's started the third inning with a single by freshman KAROLINA RODRIGUEZ and a double from sophomore SHELBI ROOHMS.
- The Hilltoppers eventually loaded the bases with one out, but could not score the runners.
- St. Edward's put two more runners on in the top of the fourth inning but could not capitalize once again.
- The Jets blew the game wide open with four runs in the fourth inning, and another run in the fifth for the final margin.
HILLTOPPER NOTES
- Rodriguez led the team with two hits and has tallied hits in five of her last six games.
- Senior ALEX MAYFIELD reached base in all three games of the series.
- St. Edward's leads the all-time series, 28-6.

"We did not play competitive ball today. We had untimely errors on defense, and did not execute with runners in scoring position, and it hurt us today. We need to have a strong week of practice and get ready for next weekend."
