Hilltoppers Drop Doubleheader to #19 St. Mary’s

St. Edward’s falls to Rattlers 2-1, 8-3

SAN ANTONIO – St. Edward's softball dropped two games Friday against No. 19 St. Mary's by scores of 2-1 and 8-3.
 
St. Edward's (19-32, 11-9 Heartland) is clinging to its postseason hopes after dropping the doubleheader. The Hilltoppers are a half game ahead of Newman for the final spot in the Heartland Conference tournament. With the two wins, St. Mary's (39-12, 15-5 Heartland) clinches the regular season conference title and will host the conference tournament for the fifth straight season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1: St. Mary's 2, St. Edward's 1)
W-J. Russell (16-6), L-Slatten (10-10)
  • It was a pitcher's duel early on, as neither team was able to solve the other's hurler.
  • In the top of the sixth inning, sophomore JINNY STRICKLIN reached on a St. Mary's error.
  • After advancing to second base on a sacrifice bunt, Stricklin came around to score on another Rattler error to break the scoreless tie.
  • St. Mary's responded in the sixth inning with two runs off a pair of RBI-doubles.
  • The Hilltoppers could not respond in the seventh inning.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2: St. Mary's 8, St. Edward's 3)
W-H. Russell (8-1), L-Rex (4-14)
  • St. Mary's started the scoring with three runs in the second frame.
  • Four more runs by the Rattlers in the fourth inning gave the home team a comfortable 7-0 lead.
  • The St. Edward's offense was unable to solve Rattler pitching as it was held scoreless through the first four frames.
  • In the fifth inning, the Hilltoppers struck for three runs with two Rattler errors helping the cause.
  • St. Mary's added a run in the sixth inning for the final tally.
 
HILLTOPPER NOTES
  • Senior MELINA SANCHEZ led the Hilltoppers at the plate, going 3-for-7.
  • Seven Hilltoppers tallied a hit in game two.
  • St. Mary's leads the all-time series, 94-50.
