SAN ANTONIO – Needing a win in its regular-season finale to keep its postseason chances hopeful, St. Edward's softball fell to No. 19 St. Mary's, 6-0, Saturday at The Park at StMU.
St. Edward's (19-33, 11-10 Heartland) is currently sixth in the Heartland Conference standings with fifth-place Newman still needing to finish two games at Panhandle State. One win by the Jets will knock the Hilltoppers out of the conference tournament. St. Mary's (40-12, 16-5 Heartland) finishes the season atop the league standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- St. Mary's opened the scoring in the second inning with a two-out, two-RBI double.
- The Rattlers pushed across two more runs in the fourth inning and put the game away in the fifth frame with a pair of two-out RBI.
- The St. Edward's offense produced just three hits off of Rattler starting pitcher Ashley Mills.
HILLTOPPER NOTES
- Senior MELINA SANCHEZ produced a hit in every game of the series.
- Sophomore BRITTNEY BRYSON had two hits to lead St Edward's.
- The Hilltoppers have never missed the Heartland Conference tournament.
- Senior LAUREN SLATTEN is seventh on the school's all-time strikeout list with 350.
- Senior ALEX MAYFIELD is currently third in all-time batting average at .385 and seventh in career hits with 200.
- St. Mary's leads the all-time series, 95-50.
