Newman Stuns Hilltoppers 3-2

WICHITA, Kansas – Newman gave St. Edward's all they could handle in Thursday evening's Heartland Conference contest, defeating the Hilltoppers 3-2.

The Jets stunned SEU in the opening set, winning 25-19 behind a .222 attack percentage while SEU hit just .156 for the set.

The Hilltoppers returned to form in the second set, hitting nearly .300 while using a 13-2 run to build an insurmountable lead to win 25-13.

Newman was able to build an early six point lead, 10-4, in the third set that held up as they won 25-17 to go up 2-1. St. Edward's responded with a set four win 25-21 to force a fifth set.

The fifth set went on much as the match did as the lead bounced back and forth with 13 ties in the set.

SEU seemed to have the match in hand with an 11-8 lead, but Newman refused to back down on their home court and went on a 4-0 run to take the lead. Ultimately, Newman closed out the match 19-17 on a kill from Kennadi Myers.

ALEXA MCANDREW and KATE HENDRIX led with 13 kills each while MIKAYLA PARKER added 11 with a team high four aces. LAURA DOOCY posted eight blocks on the night while EMILY TRAN led with 24 assists and MORGAN BECKHAM 19 digs.

The loss drops St. Edward's to 14-11 on the season and 4-5 in the Heartland with three games remaining in the regular season. They return to action on Saturday, October 27 to face Arkansas-Fort Smith at 1 pm.
