SAN ANGELO, Texas – The St. Edward's Men's Basketball team's hot start to the season continued Saturday as they defeated Angelo State University 65-58.
LUCAS DORIA scored the opening basket of the game and SEU never looked back, never trailing in the first half. The Hilltoppers led by as many as seven in the half, but ASU pushed back and eventually tied the game 21-21 with 6:30 to go.
JAMES TAYLOR drained a three with 5:36 to play to put St. Edward's back on top, but they took just a one point advantage into the locker room, 31-30.
Angelo State took their first lead of the contest in the opening seconds of the second half and eventually held a three point advantage, 36-33, with 17:15 remaining. SEU went on a 14-0 run to post their largest lead of the game, 11 points, 47-36, with 13:48 to play.
The Hilltopper defense remained tough as they held onto a double-digit lead until late in the game. Angelo State began to chip away at the lead and pulled within four points, 58-54, with 3:34 to go. St. Edward's secured the win from the free throw line, hitting seven of ten in the final three and a half minutes.
ASHTON SPEARS led with 17 points while DORIAN LOPEZ added 12 points and AUGUST HAAS 11. COREY SHERVILL pulled down seven boards to lead the Hilltoppers while Haas chipped in seven assists.
St. Edward's improves to 5-0 on the year and return home to face Dallas Christian College on Tuesday evening at 7:30 pm.
