WOMEN'S BASKETBALL POSTS EMPHATIC 62-43 WIN OVER TAMUK

AUSTIN, Texas – Late offensive bursts gave St. Edward's a commanding lead that could not be overcome as they defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville 62-43 Saturday afternoon to improve to 5-1 on the season.

MARYAM WILCHER scored the first six points of the game for the Hilltoppers, a total that would remain more than the entirety of the Javelinas in the frame. SEU held TAMUK to just 16.7% from the floor to lead 14-5 at the end of the first.

The Javelinas were able to close the gap slightly by halftime as both teams struggled offensively. SEU led by seven, 22-15.

St. Edward's came out of the break with renewed vigor, getting back-to-back threes from ISABEL HERNANDEZ and Wilcher. The Hilltoppers used a 9-1 run over four minutes midway through the third quarter to post a 17-point lead, 39-22, with 2:12 remaining.

The Javelinas were able to claw their way back into the contest, pulling within 12, 39-27, by the end of the third.

Texas A&M-Kingsville came within seven points, 47-40, with 5:52 remaining in the contest, but St. Edward's buckled down and closed the game on a 15-3 run. SEU went 3-4 from long range through the closing five minutes to secure the win.

Hernandez posted her second double-double of the season with 19 points and 14 rebounds, both game highs. Wilcher chipped in 15 points and nine boards on 5-10 shooting from the field, 3-5 from three point range while BAILEY HILL added 12.

The Hilltoppers held TAMUK to just 23.8% from the floor and 11.8% from three point range in the win. They return to action on Tuesday, facing Arlington Baptist at 6 pm.
