THE RUNDOWN
PHOENIX, Ariz. – St. Edward's women's tennis rallied back to upset No. 16 Sonoma Sate, 5-4 after senior
MARISSA WILLIAMS took down Jenna De Turk in a three-set match to secure the win. The Hilltoppers closed the day with a 5-0 "play-to-clinch" match vs. tournament host Arizona Christian Saturday to remain undefeated on the season.
Â
The Seawolves (7-2) took an early 2-0 lead in doubles over the Hilltoppers (12-0), but could not win the top court as
BETH HAYWARD and
VALENTINA MARTINEZ edged No. 17 J. Jensyn Warren and Amanda Zuidema 9-7. SSU came out strong in singles play however, and stretched their lead to 4-1 needing just one more win to clinch. SEU's
PAOLA CARPIO began the rally by defeating Clarisa Colling 6-0, 6-4, and
ELISA GUILLEN upended Hannah Highsmith, 6-1, 6-1 to trim the deficit. Martinez tied the match after a three-set battle with C. Brooner (6-1, 3-6, 6-2) in the fourth flight, and Williams brought the win home with a win on court five, defeating De Turk, 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-1.
Â
Riding high taking down their first nationally ranked opponent of the season, the Firestorm (7-1) did not have a chance as SEU took the first five matches including two singles wins in straight sets.
