Hilltoppers fall below .500 in Heartland Conference play

Box Score THE RUNDOWN
AUSTIN, Texas – An Austin native broke the hearts of a local university as Newman freshman and Lyndon B. Johnson High School alum, DeAndre Johnson tipped in a shot at the buzzer to beat St. Edward's Saturday at the RCC, 73-71.

SEU (15-8, 5-6 HC) erased a 12-point second-half deficit and knotted the score at 71 on two big free throws from COREY SHERVILL with seven seconds remaining. With overtime looming, the Jets' (11-11, 7-4 HC) Dametrius Walker missed a 3-pointer with two seconds on the clock, but the ball bounced softly to Johnson who put the ball in the basket in mid-air before the horn sounded for the win.

LANDON GOESLING scored 20 points and JAMES TAYLOR added 12 in the loss for SEU while Newman's Kevin Bryant and Tim Troussel scored 16 points apiece for the Jets.

HIGHLIGHTS
• LANDON GOESLING scored 20 points on 7-of-15 shots and it marked the 31st time in his career he's had double-digit points and the 22nd game this season.
• SEAN WATKINS had three steals and moved to sixth all-time on the SEU career list (121) passing Cornelius Gilleylen (119, 2004-06) and Rhonney Greene (119, 1996-2000).
• DORIAN LOPEZ had six rebounds, and No. six was the 350th of his career.
• JAMES TAYLOR scored a dozen off the bench marking the 43rd time in his career to score 10 or more and the 18th this season.

STAT OF THE GAME I
6 – It has been six seasons since Newman has completed a regular-season sweep of SEU (2011-12) and it was just the second time in school history the Jets beat SEU in Austin.

THEY SAID IT
SEU Head Coach Andre Cook on how the game unfolded …
"We came out in the second half and we got down nine. I believe it was nine points; maybe even got to double digits. To the kids' credit, they fought back and the local kid, the kid from Austin, [DeAndre Johnson], will remember that tip in. We fought back [and] we got it tied. When their guy missed the jump shot, I thought we were going into overtime with all the momentum, but the kid made a good tip in. It's a tough way to lose, no doubt about it."

WHAT'S NEXT
St. Edward's resumes conference play on the road Thursday at Rogers State at 7:30 p.m.
