Hilltoppers defeated by a nationally ranked team for the first time this season

Box Score

THE RUNDOWN
AUSTIN, Texas –
The No. 20-ranked St. Edward's women's tennis (18-3) team was edged by No. 24-ranked Midwestern State (9-5), 5-4 Thursday at the Austin Tennis Academy. Single-season record-holder ELISA GUILLEN extended her singles match winning streak to 18 and BETH HAYWARD claimed her first win of the season over a nationally ranked opponent in the losing effort.

Despite fighting hard in doubles, the Hilltoppers faced an uphill battle when singles competition arrived as they found themselves trailing the Mustangs 3-0. The visiting club capitalized on that momentum by winning the first two singles flights to clinch the match 5-0 before SEU reeled off four straight wins.

Guillen put SEU on the board with a straight set win over Emilija Segetlija (6-4, 7-5) and Hayward capped off the match with an upset victory over No. 27 Maddy Coffman, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-4).

THEY SAID IT
Head Coach Kendall Brooks remarks on doubles play…
"Today's loss was tough. I felt like it was a day of missed opportunities. We started off so strong in doubles and then basically gave two matches away because we couldn't close them out. That hurt. I knew that we needed to get on the board early in doubles and we just weren't able to do that."

Brooks on team's overall effort…
"I was proud of the way the girls fought and competed until the end. We finished strong and that's encouraging in the event that we may face them again. Time to enjoy a couple of days off before getting started with conference play."
