Box Score

THE RUNDOWN
ARLINGTON, Texas –
The No. 20-ranked St. Edward's women's tennis team (19-3, 1-0) continue to make history this year as they set a new single-season record with 19 match wins, outdoing the 2009 season where the team went 18-7, 4-0. Friday, the club earned a 6-3 decision over UA Fort Smith (8-5, 2-1) at the Arlington Tennis Courts. With the win, the Hilltoppers handed the Lions their first loss in Heartland Conference play, while extending their win streak to four in the all-time series.

The Hilltoppers got off to a tough start as they entered singles play behind in the match. LAURA GALVAN and ELISA GUILLEN got the best of UAFS's Lea Cizeron and Shaun Williams on court No. 2 (8-4), but the Lions were able to pull out victories in flights one and three for a 2-1 lead. SEU would roll in singles play however, taking five of the six flights highlighted by No. 73 BETH HAYWARD's 6-2, 7-6 (1-0) win over Lea Cizeron in the top singles flight. Galvan, PAOLA CARPIO, and MARISSA WILLIAMS topped their opponents in straight sets, and although it took Guillen three sets, she remains unbeaten this spring as she defeated UAFS's Andrea Stapper in flight No. 6, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.

THEY SAID IT
Head Coach Kendall Brooks' overall thoughts on today's match…
"Today was a rocky start for sure. I felt like we made way too many errors in doubles and made it very easy on them. Luckily we played much better in singles and were able to walk away with our first conference win. We have to get a better start tomorrow and take care of business."

Brooks setting a new single-season record…
"I am really proud of this group. They've been able to accomplish that because of the work they have put in day-in and day-out. They have high goals and have truly set out to accomplish them as a team and it's been fun to be a part of this special group."
