No. 20 WTEN Overcome Adversity to Defeat Newman, 6-2

Hilltoppers opens Heartland Conference play 2-0

THE RUNDOWN
PLANO, Texas –
Despite weather delays and a change in venue, the No. 20-ranked St. Edward's women's tennis team (20-3, 2-0) remained locked in and pulled off the 6-2 win vs. Newman (13-7, 1-3) Saturday at Lifetime Fitness.
 
The Hilltoppers and Jets split the first two doubles flights, but BETH HAYWARD and VALENTINA MARTINEZ upset #42 Emily Young and Liza Gerasimova 8-5 to give SEU a 2-1 lead heading into to singles. It was all SEU from that point on as they went on to win all five of the completed singles flights to cap off the weekend With the win, SEU is 9-1 all-time vs. Newman and have won five consecutive.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
• MARISSA WILLIAMS and PAOLA CARPIO defeated Mariana Gaviria and Emily Wise, 8-2.
• Williams recorded her 55th career doubles win and 20th of the season.
• PAOLA CARPIO recorded her 45th career singles win.
• LAURA GALVAN did not finish her match vs. Vlada Litvinova.

"It was a tough day mentally because of the weather to stay focused after delays and site changes, but we did a good job of staying focused and ready. Overall, it was a good weekend and start to conference play.."

The Hilltoppers will wrap-up the regular season April 13-14 with a pair of Heartland Conference matches vs. Dallas Baptist and No. 9 St. Mary's, respectively,  at the Austin Tennis Academy. Live stats will be provided at GoHilltoppers.com at its conclusion.
