Box Score 2 DENTON, Texas – Head Coach Stefanie Holler opened her first weekend at the helm with a pair of dominating wins Friday at the SpringHill Suites Invitational hosted by Texas Woman's University. The Hilltoppers defeated Florida Tech 3-0 and Northwood 3-0.
MATCH 1: ST. EDWARD'S 3 – FLORIDA TECH 0
Florida Tech got on top early but the Hilltoppers used a six point run midway through the first set to take a five point lead, 14-9. With a comfortable advantage SEU held Florida Tech at bay despite a late push to win the first set 25-21.
St. Edward's started set two strong, leading by five early, 7-2. The set two victory was never in jeopardy as the Hilltoppers hit .214 while holding the Panthers to just .022.
With momentum on their side the Hilltoppers' attack got even stronger in the third set, posting a .259 attack percentage to win in an extended set 28-26 .
ALEXA MCANDREW led the offensive barrage with nine kills while MIKAYLA PARKER added seven while hitting .429. MADDIE MIKSCH posted seven kills with a .333 attack percentage. JULIA HARTLEY recorded 16 assists in the win while McAndrew led defensively with 18 digs.
MATCH 2: ST. EDWARD'S 3 – NORTHWOOD 0
St. Edward's won a long opening rally to start the match and laid the ground work to easily defeat Northwood 25-19 in the first set.
The strong attack continued the rest of the match as SEU won set two 25-16. Northwood refused to back down and made one final surge in the third set, briefly leading 23-21. The Hilltoppers quickly responded and tied the match 23-23 with a huge swing from McAndrew. KATE HENDRIX's kill gave the lead back to St. Edward's and forced a Timberwolves timeout. The break couldn't stop the run as SEU capitalized off a Northwood error to earn the 25-23 win.
McAndrew carried the bulk of the load offensively with 12 kills and added in ten digs while MORGAN BECKHAM notched 16 digs in the win. EMILY TRAN was all over the court, recording 11 digs and 16 assists while Hendrix posted six kills. MADISON HEALD added 12 assists and six digs in the win.
The Hilltoppers remain in Denton to face Southwestern Oklahoma State at 9 am Saturday and follow with a match against Texas Woman's at 2 pm.
