WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The St. Edward's women's tennis team started the ITA Regionals on a high note, finishing day one with four individuals in the main draw, the most of any team left.
 
St. Edward's breezed through the round of 64, winning all five matches handily. No Hilltopper gave up more than three games in any set as SEU advanced all to the second round.
 
KATE MALAZONIA continued her hot streak, winning her round of 32 match 6-0, 6-2 while PAOLA CARPIO posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Isabela Campos Bifano of Newman to advance. VALENTINA MARTINEZ took down Kristen Kirby 7-5. 6-2 and BETH HAYWARD advanced 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.
 
In doubles action, Carpio/Malazonia fell 8-6 in their first round match-up against Corder/Goodland of St. Mary's, but Martinez/Hayward won 8-5 to advance to the round of 16. The duo was bested 8-6 by Steenberg/Winterrowd of Metro while Carpio/Malazonia won their consolation doubles match 8-3 over Austin-Canning/Carpenter of Dallas Baptist.
 
Play resumes tomorrow, Saturday, at 8 am at MSU.
