AUSTIN – St. Edward's volleyball looked in late-season form Friday evening, defeating Texas A&M-Kingsville in straight sets.
A late rally in set one saw the Hilltoppers take a quick 1-0 lead. SEU trailed 23-20 but the Hilltoppers closed the set on a 5-0 run and capped the set one win with an ace by
MADISON HEALD. St. Edward's hit .262 in the set with six kills from
ALEXA MCANDREW and five from
MELISSA MCNEIL.
SEU ran the momentum into the second set, mounting a 6-3 lead while Texas A&M-Kingsville was visibly out of sorts. TAMUK took the lead 22-21, but a head's up dump by Heald followed by a
NIKKI GRANT ace gave St. Edward's a crucial 23-22 lead. Pure hustle plays allowed the Hilltoppers to win the set with
MAYA SMALLS putting the exclamation point with a solo block to put SEU up 2-0 with the 26-24 win.
St. Edward's continued to impress into the third set, jumping out to a five point lead early and never let off the gas, closing out the set 25-21.
McAndrew led with 20 kills on the evening with a .292 attack percentage.
EMILY TRAN led SEU defensively with 13 digs while McAndrew chipped in 11 and McNeil 9. Smalls dominated the net, posting two solo blocks and five block assists.
St. Edward's improves to 9-6 on the season and 4-3 in Lone Star Conference action. They return to the court on Saturday, facing Texas A&M International at 1 p.m.
