HOUSTON – ASHTON SPEARS poured in a game-high 27 points, while
DORIAN LOPEZ tallied a double-double to lead St. Edward's to an 89-83 win against Rice in an exhibition contest at Tudor Fieldhouse on Thursday night.
Spears was 12 of 20 from the field, including 3 of 8 from beyond the arc in the Hilltoppers' only exhibition game of the year. Lopez scored 17 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, while
LUCAS DORIA scored 12 points.
St. Edward's held a 42-41 lead at halftime. The Owls opened the second half on a 14-2 run, taking a 53-44 lead with 17:04 remaining in the contest. However, the Hilltoppers pulled even (61-61) following a 17-8 advantage over the next five minutes.
With 2:54 remaining in the game,
COREY SHERVILL knocked down a 3-pointer that gave SEU the lead for good. The Hilltoppers pushed the advantage to 89-82, as Lopez hit a pair of free throws with 27 seconds left on the clock. Rice managed one point off a free throw in the final stretch before the game ended.
St. Edward's knocked off its second Division I opponent in as many seasons during exhibition play. The Hilltoppers defeated UTSA, 77-76, on Nov. 7, 2018, in San Antonio. SEU will open the regular season on Nov. 8 against Colorado Mesa in Denver.
