LAREDO, Texas – St. Edward's volleyball secured the top spot in their division by defeating Texas A&M International 3-1 Friday evening. SEU improves to 17-8 on the year and 12-4 in the Lone Star Conference with the win.
SEU used a 5-1 run midway through the first set to take a 14-7 lead that proved to be the difference as St. Edward's won 25-18.
TAMIU led early in the second set and it remained tight with the score tied as late as 17-17. KATARINA MENDEZ got two crucial kills as the Hilltoppers went up 21-18 and were able to close out the set 25-22.
The Dust Devils held a slight advantage in the third set, 12-10, and closed the set in emphatic fashion with a 13-3 run to give St. Edward's the set loss, 25-13.
The Hilltoppers rebounded and quickly took control of the fourth set, leading 17-7 before closing out the set 25-14 and match.
ALEXA MCANDREW led with 19 kills and just seven errors for a .286 attack percentage while MELISSA MCNEIL added 10 kills. EMILY TRAN had a team high 24 assists with MADISON HEALD close behind with 17. Nicole Grant headed up the SEU defense with 18 digs while Tran added 15 and McNeil, Heald and McAndrew all posting 11.
The Hilltoppers close the regular season on Saturday, facing Texas A&M-Kingsville at 2 pm in Kingsville, Texas.
