WICHITA, Kan. - BAILEY HILL coolly stepped to the line with just two seconds remaining with the game tied and drained both free throws to hand St. Edward's a 66-64 win over Newman Saturday afternoon.
SEU started well and led by seven points at the end of the first quarter, 20-13. Another big run in the second quarter sent the Hilltoppers into the locker room with a 17-point lead, 41-24.
The Jets regrouped at halftime and steadily picked away at the Hilltoppers lead. By the start of the fourth quarter SEU's lead was down to just four points, 52-48.
Hill started the frame with a three and a pair of layups from LEXI CUNNINGHAM and SAMMIE DUFEK pushed St. Edward's lead back to double digits, 59-48. SEU's offense went quiet in the next three minutes, allowing Newman to close the gap. The teams traded free throws in the final three minutes with St. Edward's getting the last word in two by Hill to secure the win.
Hill led with 19 points, going 7-13 from the floor, 3-6 from three point range, with three rebounds. MARYAM WILCHER chipped in 12 points and ISABEL HERNANDEZ 11.
St. Edward's improves to 13-11 on the year and 5-5 in Heartland Conference play. They return to action on Wednesday, hosting Rogers State at 5:30 pm.
