AUSTIN – ROBBIE LAMMONS had four hits and
ZACH SCHINDLER hit a three-run homer to lead St. Edward's to an 11-1 victory over Houston-Victoria in a non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
The Hilltoppers (13-16), who tallied their largest margin of victory since opening day, scored in the first frame as
RYAN MCPHAIL led off with a double and later crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
The Jaguars (14-15) tied up the contest in the third inning.
After loading the bases, Houston-Victoria had a run forced in as Luis Vargas drew a walk. St. Edward's head coach Rob Penders made a call to the bullpen and
TYLER INGRAM came in and struck out the next two batter to end the threat.
The Hilltoppers responded in the bottom of the panel with five runs to take a 6-1 lead. The decisive stanza included 11 batters coming to the plate. St. Edward's tied together four consecutive hits, all with two outs, to fuel the big inning.
After the first two batters of the frame grounded out,
JACOB JOHNSON started the run with a single.
BLAKE HOLUB following with a double that allowed Johnson to score from first base. Lammons then placed a single through the middle of the infield that scored Holub from second. After the 'Toppers loaded the bases, Schindler was hit by a pitch to force in another run.
NATHAN MEDRANO then capped the scoring in the panel with a two-run single.
Houston-Victoria picked up three hits over the next three innings, but was unable to produce any runs against a trio of SEU relievers.
The Hilltoppers put the game out of reach in the sixth with four runs, all coming with two outs.
Lammons posted a two-out single and
MORGAN ALLEN followed with a walk. Schindler then worked the count to full and fought off three pitches in the zone with foul balls. On the ninth pitch of the at-bat, the junior first baseman turned around an offering from Brandon Tipton and drilled it over the wall in left field. It marked the second round-tripper for Schindler this spring.
TY MARKEE continued the inning by reaching on an error after Schindler's long ball. Medrano was then hit by a pitch to push Markee into scoring position.
JACOB VASQUEZ was called off the bench and provided a pinch-hit single to center field that allowed Markee to score.
DANIEL SABATINO came on for the seventh, giving up only a single before closing out the contest.
COOPER BAILEY (3-3) received the win, as the right-hander pitched one inning and gave up only one hit. Gustavo Valdes (1-2) took the loss after yielding six runs on eight hits in three innings of work.
St. Edward's tallied 14 hits on the day, led by Lammons' four-hit effort. Allen, Holub and Medrano all had two hits apiece, while Allen also had a triple and Holub recorded a double.
The Hilltoppers will return to action this weekend with a trip to Rogers State for a three-game conference series. The Heartland set opens up Friday with a doubleheader in Claremore, Okla.
