CLAREMORE, Okla. – St. Edward's split a Heartland Conference doubleheader against Rogers State on Friday at the Diamond Sports Complex. The Hilltoppers claimed the opener by a 5-1 score, while the Hillcats evened the series with a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.
The two teams will play the rubber game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
GAME ONE RECAP
RYAN HILL pitched six innings, giving up only three hits, three walks and an unearned run to lead St. Edward's to its second conference victory of the season.
The Hilltoppers scored three runs in the opening frame to grab the early advantage.
DYLAN MACKIN scored on a wild pitch before
ROBBIE LAMMONS drove in
JACOB VASQUEZ on a single to right-center field.
MORGAN ALLEN also followed with a run-scoring single.
The lone run against Hill came in the bottom of the opening panel on a wild pitch.
St. Edward's pushed its lead to 4-1 in the fourth after an error allowed Allen to score from third base.
The 'Toppers added a final tally in the following stanza on Mackin's sacrifice fly that pushed
RYAN MCPHAIL across home plate.
SEU compiled 12 hits in the series opener, while four Hilltoppers collected a pair of knocks apiece.
Hill (5-2) struck out two over six innings to earn the win.
JAYSON FLORES pitched a scoreless inning of relief to close out the game.
GAME TWO RECAP
St. Edward's committed four errors that led to all three runs scored by Rogers State in a one-run loss.
The Hillcats scored unearned runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings to edge the Hilltoppers.
The decisive mark in the sixth came on a throwing error with one out that allowed Nick Follett to come around and score.
St. Edward's managed a run in the fourth on
MORGAN ALLEN's RBI single. The 'Toppers scored again in the fifth to even the game at 2-2 after
BLAKE HOLUB was beaned with the bases loaded.
The Hilltoppers threatened to tie the game again in the eighth.
Holub led off with a single through the right side of the infield.
NOLAN BURR came on as a pinch runner and advanced to second on
ROBBIE LAMMONS' single. Allen then laid down a sacrifice bunt that pushed Burr to third base and Lammons to second. However,
TY MARKEE hit a sharp grounder to the third baseman who caught Burr off the bag and applied the tag for the second out.
ZACH SCHINDLER ended the frame with a fly out to left field.
Jackson Simonsgaard (5-0) scattered six hits and allowed two runs over seven innings to pick up the victory. Brock Knoten earned his sixth save of the year after pitching a 1-2-3 ninth.
JACOB MCROBERTS (0-1) received the loss after an unearned run scored in the sixth. The right-hander pitched five innings in relief, allowing just two hits and a walk. He also struck out one.
