St. Edward's women's tennis clinches regular-season title

St. Edward's tops St. Mary's, claims regular-season title

Box Score
SAN ANTONIO – LAURA GALVAN rallied from a set down to provide the clinching point and lead 17th-ranked St. Edward's to a 4-3 victory over No. 37 St. Mary's on Friday at the Anne Marie Tennis Center. The win also clinched the Heartland Conference regular-season title for the Hilltoppers.

St. Edward's (16-4, 4-0 HC) won the doubles point and then battled to pick up three of the six singles points to earn the league victory. It also marked the first win for the Hilltoppers against the Rattlers since Feb. 25, 2012. The 2012 campaign also was the last time that SEU was crowned Heartland champions.

The Hilltoppers claimed two of three doubles matchups to claim the early point. BETH HAYWARD and VALENTINA MARTINEZ remained unbeaten this spring with a 6-3 win at the top spot to tie up the doubles action. Galvan and ELISA GUILLEN then edged their opponents, 7-5, at the third flight to take the 1-0 lead in the contest.

After St. Mary's evened the match with a win at No. 6 singles, Martinez finished off a 6-2, 6-1 win at the third position to give St. Edward's a 2-1 advantage.

The Rattlers again pulled even after winning the top flight but PAO CARPIO was a straight-sets victor (6-3, 6-2) at the fifth spot to give the 'Toppers a one-point lead. Another point went to the hosts at No. 2 singles setting up the decision at the fourth flight.

Galvan dropped the opening frame, 6-2, but rallied to take the second set by the same score. She then finished off the third set with a 6-1 victory to clinch the contest.

St. Edward's will wrap up the regular season on Thursday, April 18 against Texas-Tyler. The non-conference tilt will take place at 12 p.m. at Austin Tennis Academy.
