VICTORIA – St. Edward's overcame a 6-4 deficit and scored three runs between the seventh and eighth innings to overtake Houston-Victoria en route to a 7-6 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Riverside Stadium.
The Hilltoppers (17-23) trailed by two runs with one out in the seventh before
JACOB VASQUEZ hit a double that drove in both
RYAN MCPHAIL and
DYLAN MACKIN.
St. Edward's used a pair of extra-base hits in the eighth to take the lead for good. With one out in the inning,
TY MARKEE hit a triple to right field.
CHASE FONTANA came off the bench and belted a double on the first pitch he saw, driving in Markee for the go-ahead score.
BRANDON PETTINATI came on in the bottom of the frame and worked around a leadoff single to keep the Jaguars (16-25) from tying up the contest.
Pettinati then handed the ball over
JAYSON FLORES in the ninth. The righty struck out the first batter he faced, but walked the next. However, the following hitter hit a liner to
DANIEL SABATINO at shortstop. Sabatino made the catch in the air and then doubled off the runner at first base to end the game.
NICK DAVIS (1-0) received the win after pitching a pair of scoreless frames in relief.
St. Edward's received a leadoff home run from McPhail to start the contest. Vasquez also had a run-scoring hit in the first to give the 'Toppers a 2-0 advantage.
However, Houston-Victoria cut the lead in half on a sacrifice fly in the third inning. The Jaguars then scored four times in the third to take a 5-2 lead.
Markee hit a two-run single in the fourth to draw SEU within a run.
Joshua Fonseca hit a solo homer in the fifth to push the lead back to two.
The Hilltoppers compiled a dozen hits, led by a trio of players with two knocks apiece. Vasquez was 2 for 5 with a double and three RBIs. Markee was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, while McPhail had two hits, including his third round-tripper of the campaign.
St. Edward's will return to Austin to face St. Mary's in a three-game conference series later this week. The set was pushed back a day and will begin with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Thursday at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
