Women's tennis falls in championship match

Box Score

ARLINGTON – The 19th-ranked St. Edward's women's tennis team dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 40 St. Mary's in the championship match of the Heartland Conference Tournament on Saturday at the Arlington Tennis Center.

The Hilltoppers (18-5) had their eight-match winning streak come to an end. Just over two weeks ago, St. Edward's defeated the Rattlers for the first time in seven years to clinch the regular-season league title, but was unable to duplicate the feat in the tournament championship.

LAURA GALVAN and VALENTINA MARTINEZ picked up the only two points for the 'Toppers, both in singles action.

Galvan rallied from a set down to topple her opponent at the fourth spot (3-6, 6-3, 6-3), while Martinez also had to come back from a one-set deficit to upend her challenger (6-7 [5-7], 6-3, 6-2).

St. Edward's will wait to see if it earns an at-large selection for the NCAA Division II Championship. The selection show is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7.
