CLEBURNE – St. Edward's run in the Heartland Conference Tournament came to an end following a 4-3 loss to Rogers State on Saturday evening in the championship game.
The Hillcats (34-16) scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to overtake the Hilltoppers.
St. Edward's took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame, as
JACOB VASQUEZ laid down a squeeze bunt that allowed
RYAN MCPHAIL to score.
Rogers State pulled even in the third and then took a lead in the fourth on a solo homer.
MORGAN ALLEN's RBI double in the sixth evened up the game again. The Hilltoppers proceeded to load the bases with no outs, but were unable to get another run in that frame.
ZACH SHEPHERD had an RBI double in the seventh that put the 'Toppers back in front, 3-2. However, the Hillcats answered in the eighth, as the first four batters reached base. The go-ahead run was scored on a bunt single.
St. Edward's completed the 2019 campaign with a 27-27 record. The Hilltoppers won eight of its final 10 games.
