Hayward, Martinez named ITA All-Americans

TEMPE, Ariz. – St. Edward's seniors BETH HAYWARD and VALENTINA MARTINEZ were named All-Americans, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced on Thursday.

Hayward and Martinez earned All-America honors for their doubles play, as the pairing finished the season ranked second in the nation. The duo posted a 25-3 overall record during the 2018-19 campaign, including a 20-1 mark in dual-match competition. Hayward and Martinez were 5-0 against nationally-ranked foes while helping the Hilltoppers to their first regular-season Heartland Conference crown since 2012 and an appearance in the NCAA Round of 16.

Hayward, who hails from London, England, completed her senior campaign as a first-team All-Heartland honoree. Martinez, a product of Katy, also was selected as the winner of the ITA South Central Region Most Improved Senior and a second-team all-conference pick.

Under the direction of head coach Kendall Brooks, St. Edward's not only won the regular-season conference title, but also captured the NCAA Division II South Central Region championship with a victory over Angelo State. The Hilltoppers wrapped up the year with a 19-6 overall record and was ranked 15th in the final ITA poll, which is highest national ranking in program history.
