Six Hilltoppers named to All-Heartland teams


WACO – Six St. Edward's women's tennis student-athletes earned All-Heartland Conference honors, the league office announced on Monday. Four Hilltoppers were named to the first team, while two other earned second-team laurels.

PAO CARPIO, LAURA GALVAN, BETH HAYWARD and KATE MALAZONIA all collected first-team honors. ELISA GUILLEN and VALENTINA MARTINEZ were selected to the second team. Martinez also was named the Heartland Outstanding Senior of the Year.

Carpio is 20-5 in singles play this season, including a 12-3 mark in dual-match play. She is on a four-match winning streak and was 2-0 in conference action. Carpio also owns a 23-6 record in doubles play.

Galvan has amassed a 14-13 mark on the singles mark, including a 12-8 ledger this spring. The Houston native also provided the clinching point in St. Edward's win over St. Mary's to capture the Heartland regular-season championship. Galvan is unbeaten at the top two positions, while she also has tallied a 16-5 record in doubles action this year.

Hayward is 13-13 overall in singles play this season and has teamed up with Martinez to achieve the third-ranked doubles team in the nation. Hayward and Martinez are 23-3 in doubles competition, while also posting an 18-1 mark this spring. The duo is 3-0 against ranked opponents this season.

Malazonia has netted a 20-8 record in singles competition. The Birmingham, England, native is 11-7 between the top two singles spots this spring. She also has logged a 13-5 mark on the doubles courts.

Guillen has tallied a 13-5 ledger in singles play between the fall and spring campaigns. The New Braunfels product is 9-4 this spring, including a perfect 2-0 mark in conference action. Guillen also has racked up a 15-9 record in doubles competition.

Martinez, who is currently ranked as the No. 74 singles player in the nation, is 24-4 against singles competitors. The Katy native has won seven straight matches and tallied an 18-1 mark in singles action this spring.

The Hilltoppers finished runner-up in the Heartland Conference Championship and will wait to see if their name is called during the NCAA Division II Championship selection show, which will take place at 7:30 p.m. (CT) Tuesday on the NCAA's website.
