AUSTIN – Joseph (Joe) Allen Beck Sr. passed away on Friday, June 28, 2019, at the age of 82 years old.
Beck was a 1958 graduate of St. Edward's University. The Indianapolis native played basketball for the Hilltoppers from 1954-58, earning all-conference honors in each of his final three seasons. He was named an honorable-mention All-American during the 1956-57 campaign.
Beck was hired as the head men's basketball coach at St. Edward's in 1965. He led the squad to 102 wins over nine seasons. Under his direction, the Hilltoppers were crowned co-champions of the Big State Conference in 1971, while he was named coach of the year.
St. Edward's Athletics honored Beck was an inductee to the Hall of Fame in 1987.
