Carpio to be honored by ITA this weekend in New York


TEMPE, Ariz. – PAO CARPIO is one of 10 tennis players who will be honored for the 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award this weekend at the organization's Leadership Awards Weekend in New York.

Carpio, who will receive the honor for NCAA Division II women's tennis, exhausted her eligibility at St. Edward's following the 2019 campaign. The San Salvador, El Salvador, native helped the Hilltoppers to the Heartland Conference regular-season championship in her senior season.

During her time on the Hilltop, Carpio as named to the St. Edward's Dean's List every semester and to the Heartland Conference President's Honor Roll each year. She also was an ITA Scholar-Athlete all four years and an Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar in 2017. Carpio was a two-time, first-team All-Heartland selection on the court.

While in New York, Carpio, and the rest of the participants, will take part in the Arthur Ashe Kids Day at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and an awards banquet inside the Empire State Building on Saturday before concluding with a community service event at the Cary Leeds Center for Tennis in the Bronx a day later.

The ITA Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recognizes outstanding individuals in all divisions at the regional and national level. The award is presented annually to NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JUCO men's and women's players who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
