Box Score 2 ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – St. Edward's volleyball used a balanced attack on the opening day of the 2019 season, posting a strong showing against #20 Texas A&M-Commerce despite falling 3-0 and defeating UT Tyler 3-0.
GAME 1: SEU 0 – COMMERCE 3
St. Edward's gave #20 Texas A&M-Commerce all they could handle in set one, holding close to the Lions throughout the frame. SEU scored five straight late in the set, leading 19-16 to force a Commerce timeout.
The timeout did the trick as Commerce got a crucial kill from Riley Davidson to stop the run. TAMCU closed the set on an 8-2 run to win set one 25-22.
Commerce led early in the second set and never relinquished the lead, closing the set on an 9-1 run to win 25-16. SEU was unable to make a run in the final set either, falling 25-15.
ALEXA MCANDREW led with eight kills and hit .400 in the match while
KATARINA MENDEZ added six.
CAMILLE DEDEAUX and
EMILY TRAN posted nine digs each to lead the way while
LAURA DOOCY had three block assists.
GAME 2: SEU 3 – UT TYLER 0
SEU pulled out set one with a rush to the finish, outscoring UTT 11-6 to win 25-20.
With the second set tied 22-22, SEU took advantage of a service error and got the final kill from Kaatlyn Krafka to win set two 25-23.
McAndrew served five straight points midway through in the final set to give St. Edward's a 13-8 lead and they were never threatened the rest of the way, easily closing out the set 25-19 to win the match in straight sets.
McAndrew led with nine kills while
MYKAYLA TIMLIN and Krafka both posted eight in the win. The Hilltoppers hit .255 as a team and posted nine blocks in the win.
SEU starts the year at 1-1 and close out the Reddie-Tiger Invitational against Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist Saturday.
