AUSTIN – Tarleton State rallied from a four-point deficit in the final two minutes to upend St. Edward's, 68-64, in Lone Star Conference action Thursday evening at the RAC.
The Hilltoppers (11-8, 7-7 LSC) held a 61-57 advantage after
DEIJAH BLANKS connected on a pair of free throws with 2:19 remaining in the game. After each team traded empty possessions, the Texans (14-5, 8-5 LSC) were able to wrestle away an offensive rebound that turned into an Alexa Hoy 3-pointer to trim the lead to one point with 1:21 to play.
St. Edward's turned the ball over on the ensuing trip down the floor and Tarleton State capitalized as Mackenzie Hailey buried a triple to give the visitors a 63-61 lead.
Four consecutive free throws by the Texans pushed the advantage to six points.
CHARLI BECKER hit a 3-pointer with 16 seconds left on the clock to pull the Hilltoppers within three points. However, the 'Toppers were forced to foul following the inbound and Tarleton added another point from the charity stripe to cap the scoring.
The Texans built a 10-point lead after the opening quarter and led 41-35 at halftime. St. Edward's used a 10-4 run to tie the game at 45-all with 5:22 left in the third period. Back-to-back layups by Becker gave SEU a 49-45 advantage with 3:42 remaining in the frame.
The Hilltoppers led 51-50 heading into the final quarter.
Blanks finished the game with 22 points to lead all scorers. Becker posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while
HALEY BLANKINSHIP and
SAMMIE DUFEK scored 10 points apiece.
St. Edward's will return to the court Saturday, as the Hilltoppers host Texas Woman's. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
