No. 10 St. Edward’s fends off pesky Patriots

Box Score AUSTIN – The St. Edward's men's basketball team kept their home win streak alive with an 87-80 win over Dallas Baptist University Saturday afternoon. With the win the Hilltoppers improve to 19-2 on the year and 13-2 in Lone Star Conference play.
 
After the opening bucket by DBU, St. Edward's went on a 14-0 run to lead by 14-3 five minutes in. The Patriots battled back and pulled within two, 30-28, with just under three minutes to go in the half. SEU pieced together another run to close the half and went into the locker room with a ten-point advantage, 41-31.
 
SEU went back up by 14 in the second half before going cold offensively, allowing the Patriots to get back in the game. DBU went on a 12-0 run to take the lead, 51-50, with 11:19 remaining on the clock.
 
After the lead bounced back and forth, JAKE KRAFKA hit a pair of free throws with eight minutes left to put the Hilltoppers back on top for good. The Patriots were within striking distance the rest of the way but SEU secured the win from the free throw line, going 5-5 in the final minute.
 
DORIAN LOPEZ led the Hilltoppers with 22 points, going 6-12 from the field, 4-7 from three-point range, and a perfect 6-6 from the line. He added a team-high ten rebounds to post his fifth double-double of the season. ASHTON SPEARS added 19 points, AUGUST HAAS 17, COREY SHERVILL 12 and Krafka 11.
 
SEU returns to the road to face Texas A&M International on Thursday, February 6 at 7:30 pm.
