ODESSA – The St. Edward's baseball team split a doubleheader Saturday against UT Permian Basin. The Hilltoppers dropped the opener, 1-0, but bounced back for a 13-5 victory in the nightcap. It marked SEU's first road win of the season.
St. Edward's jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings of the nightcap. The 'Toppers piled on four runs in the fourth to take an 11-0 advantage to take full control of the contest.
BLAKE HOLUB paced SEU with a 3 for 4 performance at the plate. He also scored four runs and drove in one.
DANTE GUTIERREZ drove in three on a pair of singles, while
JACOB VASQUEZ also had two hits.
HUNTER TORREZ hit a two-run homer in the second inning, as he posted the only extra-base hit for the Hilltoppers in the game.
NATHAN MEDRANO earned the win on the mound, as the righty struck out five and allowed only one earned run in five innings of action.
BRADY PUTNIK and
AUSTIN ESSEX each added a scoreless inning in relief.
The Falcons claimed the first game of the day, pushing across the only run in the fifth inning on Peyton Koopman's double.
Holub took the loss, despite only giving up two hits and the one run while fanning four in five innings of work.
The two teams will complete the four-game set Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
