LAREDO, Texas – St. Edward's women's basketball was held to just 28 second half points to drop a 66-62 decision to Texas A&M International Thursday.
SEU's defense was tough in the first half, holding the Dust Devils to 25.9% from field and just seven second quarter points to lead 34-18 at the break.
DEIJAH BLANKS scored 13 points in the half with
CHARLI BECKER and Jasmine Jackson adding six.
TAMIU started the second half on a mission, quickly pulling within single digits, 36-27, just three minutes into the frame. St. Edward's was able to push it back to ten points by the end of third, 46-36.
Once again, the DustDevils opened the quarter on a run, opening the fourth on a 6-0 run to pull within four, 46-42. With 5:30 left to go TAMIU had finally clawed their way back to even the score, 48-48.
Despite the back-and-forth, TAMIU took the lead on a three-pointer with just over a minute remaining and SEU was never able to recover as the DustDevils secured the win from the free throw line.
SEU was held to just 32.4 percent from the field in the game and 15.4 percent from three-point range. Blanks led with 21 points while Becker closed the game with 10 and a team-high three steals.
St. Edward's falls to 12-9 on the season and 8-8 in Lone Star Conference play. They remain on the road to face Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday at 2 pm.
