KINGSVILLE, Texas – St. Edward's used a steady stream of offense throughout the game to mount an early lead that they continued to build on to defeat Texas A&M-Kingsville 83-76 Saturday afternoon. The win improves SEU to 21-2 on the season and 15-2 in Lone Star Conference play.
St. Edward's led by ten early and were able to maintain the lead, pushing it to a 21-point lead on
DORIAN LOPEZ's layup with just under a minute remaining, a lead that held up until halftime.
The Hilltoppers were able to hold a comfortable lead throughout the majority of the second half until the Javalinas made a final push down the stretch. TAMUK came within six, 66-60, with 9:32 to play and made the final ten minutes of the contest interesting, getting within one point, 66-65, with eight minutes to play.
JAKE KRAFKA's three with just over six minutes to play put the Hilltoppers up six, 73-66, and gave SEU enough breathing room to close out the win.
COREY SHERVILL led with 18 points and six rebounds as SEU shot 59.5 percent from the field, 56.3 percent from three-point range and 80 percent from the free throw line.
ASHTON SPEARS added 17 points,
DORIAN LOPEZ 15 and Krafka 13.
The Hilltoppers return home to face UT Permian Basin on Thursday at 7:30 pm.
