SEU rally falls short in series finale on Sunday

KINGSVILLE – Texas A&M-Kingsville held off a late rally by St. Edward's to claim the series finale, 10-6, Sunday at Nolan Ryan Field. The Hilltoppers and Javelinas split the four-game set.

Texas A&M-Kingsville (11-7, 11-7 LSC) held a 1-0 lead before MATT JIMENEZ produced a run-scoring single that sent DOMINIC MORACE around to cross the plate.

However, the Javelinas answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead. TAMUK added one more in the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the sixth to push the advantage to 8-1.

St. Edward's (9-9, 9-9 LSC) cut into the lead with five runs in the eighth.

DYLAN MACKIN drove in DANTE GUTIERREZ on a groundout with the bases loaded. NATHAN RAMON followed with a single through the left side of the infield that brought in TY MARKEE. Jimenez singled again, bringing ZANE PHELPS. TYLER DEAN then produced a two-run single, playing both Jimenez and Ramon, trimming the lead to 8-6.

The Javelinas responded again in the bottom of the panel, plating two runs to push the advantage to 10-6.

The Hilltoppers put two runners on base in the ninth, but were unable to get any other runs across before the game ended.

SEU posted 10 hits on the day. Jimenez was 2 for 3 with two RBIs. BLAKE HOLUB also had two hits. St. Edward's only extra-base hit of the day was a double from MORGAN ALLEN.

TYLER BROWN suffered the loss on the mound, as he gave up six runs on eight hits in four innings of work.

The Hilltoppers will return to Austin to host top-ranked Angelo State next weekend. The four-game series opens at 2 p.m. Friday, March 6.
