Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Maxwell's career night lifts #9 SEU to overtime win

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - B.J. MAXWELL scored the second most points in a single game in St. Edward's men's basketball history with 47 points as the Hilltoppers defeated Midwestern State 112-105 in overtime Sunday.

Maxwell was 19-32 from the floor, 4-8 from three-point range and 5-6 from the free throw line. His 47 points was just one shy of single game scoring record of 48 points set by Zembra Everett against LeTourneau in 1973-74.

St. Edward's opened the game on an 8-0 run and led by as many as 12 in the first half, clearly on a mission after Saturday night's loss. The Hilltoppers took a nine-point advantage into halftime, 49-40.

SEU held onto a slight advantage in the second half until MSU's Trae Jones hit a three with just under seven minutes to play to tie the game at 75. The Mustangs quickly went up by six over the next minute before the Hilltoppers got hot again to regain the lead on DANIEL VENZANT's three with 4:33 to play.

Four lead changes and two ties in the final four and a half minutes led to the exciting finish in regulation. MSU's Pierre Sanders hit a fast break layup with 26 seconds remaining to tie the game 90-90 and the Hilltoppers were unable to get off a shot on their final possession, sending the game into overtime.

SEU struck first in the extra frame with back-to-back threes by JAKE KRAFKA and KIJANA LOVE which proved to be the difference maker as St. Edward's never trailed in overtime, outscoring the Mustangs 22-15.

The Hilltoppers shot an impressive 54.5 percent from the floor and 46.4 percent from three point range. Joining Maxwell in double-digit scoring were Venzant who added 20 points, RYAN GARZA with 14 and Love with 13.

Maxwell and LOGAN COOK led on the glass with eight rebounds a piece while Krafka pulled down seven. Venzant added eight assists and three steals.

St. Edward's improves to 3-1 on the year and 1-1 in Lone Star Conference play with the win. They return home to face UT Tyler on Thursday. Tipoff is set for 7 pm.
